If you've scrolled through social media lately, you've seen red light therapy everywhere — in gyms, spas, and even home devices. It's often marketed as a miracle cure for everything from wrinkles to weight loss to chronic pain. So what's actually true?
At our Southlake, TX clinic, red light therapy is one of the three core treatments we use to help patients with weight loss and chronic pain relief. We've seen real, consistent results — but we also believe in being honest about what it can and can't do. Here's the full picture.
How Red Light Therapy Works
Red light therapy — also called photobiomodulation (PBM) — uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light to penetrate the skin and reach deeper tissues, including muscles, nerves, and even joints.
Unlike UV light (which damages skin), red and near-infrared light is absorbed by the mitochondria — the energy-producing "power plants" inside your cells. This absorption boosts a process called ATP production, giving your cells more energy to repair, reduce inflammation, and function better.
In simple terms: Red light therapy doesn't "cure" anything overnight. It gives your cells the energy they need to heal and function more efficiently — which is why it supports so many different health goals.
This is also why it pairs so well with our other therapies — leg compression therapy and vibration plate therapy. Together they attack weight gain and chronic pain from multiple angles.
